Let me just say this: if your porch doesn’t feel like an extension of your house, you’re doing it wrong. For me, it’s the first space I see every morning and the last place I linger as the sun goes down — so I knew it had to reflect the things I love most: texture, history, coziness, and a touch of wanderlust.
I wanted a space that felt collected, not decorated. Something layered, soulful, and a little unexpected. Here’s how I turned a plain outdoor space into a boho-vintage sanctuary using old doors, bridal hope chests, and pieces that tell a story.
The Beauty of the Find
Forget fast furniture — this porch is built on pieces with a past. One of my favorite additions? A salvaged old wooden door I found at a local antique store, Mogul Interior. I turned it into a coffee table by adding hairpin legs, and now it’s the conversation starter of the whole space.
Next to that is a stunning bridal hope chest, passed down from my grandmother. It stores all my porch blankets and books, but more importantly, it brings a quiet, romantic energy to the corner where I love to curl up with tea.
I anchored everything with a rustic carved armoire — think deep wood grain, ornate panels, and just enough age to feel magical. Not only is it practical for extra storage, but it gives the porch some real visual weight and texture.
Carved Doors Over Screens
I knew I wanted a backdrop — but instead of going with a typical folding screen, I leaned into the unexpected and sourced a tall, ornately carved wooden door. Weathered, raw, and absolutely breathtaking, it now leans casually behind my daybed and instantly elevates the space.
It’s my favorite trick for creating outdoor rooms that feel curated, not staged. Think of it as art — one that tells stories without needing a frame.
Earthy Layers and Global Textiles
My color palette is anchored in earthy, sun-washed tones: terracotta, olive, turmeric, dusty rose. I mixed in textiles from around the world — a block-printed throw from Jaipur, a banjara kutch rug, and handwoven pillows in muted indigos and rusty reds.
I love pattern layering. You just have to trust your gut — as long as the tones speak the same language, the mix will feel intentional and cozy.
Texture Is Everything
To keep things feeling natural and bohemian, I brought in:
-
Old brass planters filled with extra throws and outdoor books
-
A plantation style lounge chair for soft contrast
I believe texture is the glue that holds an eclectic space together — especially outside.
Bring On the Green
Plants are my porch’s best accessory. I used a mix of vintage pots and quirky vessels (hello, teapot-turned-planter) to house everything from trailing ivy to rubber plants.
Pro tip: group your plants in clusters of different heights and leaf shapes. It makes the space feel lush, lived-in, and layered.
Let the Light Work Its Magic
Lighting equals mood. I strung up soft white globe lights overhead, then added clusters of lanterns and candles in corners for that glowy, golden hour magic. I used latticed carved doors with floral designs that bring in the sunset shadows and create magic on my walls
Final Thoughts
This porch is more than a photo-worthy space — it’s where I read, sip, journal, stretch, and dream. It feels like an escape, even though it’s only steps from my front door.
Whether it’s a carved door, a hope chest, or an old armoire, I say: let your furniture tell your story. Blend styles. Mix textures. Break the rules. And most importantly — create a space that feels like you.
